CIAPS Graduate Wins Royal Society award ceremony program

A graduate of the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, (CIAPS) Ogechukwu Akabuike has been announced the winner of the 2023 Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene President Fund.

The announcement was made by the Society’s President, Simon Bush, on Wednesday 19th July 2023.

The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene more commonly known by its acronym RSTMH, has been dedicated to improving tropical medicine and global health since 1907.

Ogechukwu Akabuike is a public health laboratory scientist at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Abuja, Nigeria. An environmental health consultant that holds a master’s degree in public health. She graduated from CIAPS in 2017.

Reacting to the news that she has been announced as a recipient of the RSTMH President Fund, an ecstatic Ogechukwu Akabuike declared that “while assiduously working to contribute to the control and prevention of emerging and re-emerging tropical diseases, I eagerly anticipate active participation in all RSTMH events, engaging with brilliant minds, and sharing lessons learned with individuals in my sphere of influence”.

Other recipients of the 2023 RSTMH President Fund include Gautam Satheesh, Richelle W. Kihoro, and Dr Shey Robert Adamu.

Gautam Satheesh is currently a Cardiovascular Research Officer at The George Institute for Global Health, India, with a key focus on improving access to essential and evidence-based healthcare in resource-limited health systems.

Richelle W. Kihoro is a research scientist affiliated with Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and is stationed at Eastern and Southern Africa Centre of International Parasite Control (ESACIPAC).

Dr Shey Robert Adamu is an early-career researcher at the University of Buea in Cameroon where he teaches and carries out research on the development of diagnostics and vaccines for onchocerciasis and other NTDs.

The CIAPS Career Development team in a statement signed by Leo D’amante has commended the RSTMH for its agelong dedication to human development and the improvement of health for all. CIAPS also congratulates recipients of 2023 adding that the “Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies wishes our own Ogechukwu Akabuike and all other recipients of this prestigious award all the very best in their future endeavors.
